Therapeutic angiogenesis in the brain
We constantly seek novel approaches to improve therapy of neurovascular disorders.
Certain cerebro-occlusive diseases lack optimal treatment currently, hence leaving a clinical need un-met, for a safe and effective revascularization of the brain. Angiogenesis is the vascular growth factor promoted formation of new blood vessels from the pre-existing vasculature. Vascular endothelial growth factors act primarily on endothelial cells, making them attractive candidates for pro-angiogenic therapies.
In collaboration with the Alitalo Lab, (University of Helsinki, Molecular Cancer Biology), renown for its expertise in the vascular field, we explore systematically all know vascular growth factor’s therapeutic potentials in the brain of a little animal model sys-tem, paving the way for a new therapeutic approach by gene therapy.
