Clinical trials involving children
The Clinical Trial Unit at the New Children’s Hospital is Finland’s largest research unit dedicated to promoting the health of children and adolescents. We generate evidence-based information to provide the best possible care for our patients.
We currently have approximately 50 pharmaceutical or device trials in progress. We work in close cooperation with companies in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. We conduct a wide range of research into diseases affecting children and adolescents, such as diabetes, migraine, surgical conditions, and rare diseases. Half of the research is conducted on cancer. Our research investigates the methods provided by pharmaceuticals, treatments, medical devices, and diagnostics to detect various diseases at an early stage and to improve treatment.
Extensive national and international collaboration ensures that our patients have quick access to the latest and most effective treatments. Through our collaborative networks, we are laying the groundwork for high-quality care at the children’s hospital that offers the most comprehensive specialized healthcare services in Finland.
If we have an ongoing trial that is suitable for you, the physician treating you will offer you the opportunity to participate in it. Participating in a trial is always voluntary. The safety of children and adolescents is a top priority in these trials.
Before you participate in a trial, our staff will explain the trial to you. You will also receive information about the purpose of the trial, how it will be conducted, and the potential benefits and risks involved. You will have time to review details about the trial and get answers to any questions you may have before signing the consent form to participate in the trial.
Children and adolescents participate in decision-making together with their guardians, taking into account their age and stage of development. You may withdraw from the trial at any time without it affecting the care we provide.
We conduct our trials at the New Children’s Hospital which is Finland’s largest hospital focused on demanding specialized healthcare in pediatrics. We treat patients from all over Finland. Our researchers represent all specialties in pediatric medicine.
Experienced staff
Our Clinical Trial Unit employs more than 20 experienced professionals. We have expertise in conducting and managing research projects. The pediatricians, research nurses, specialists, and biomedical laboratory scientists working in our unit collaborate closely with researchers and other partners. We support families throughout the entire trial.
Facilities and equipment
The facilities and equipment at New Children’s Hospital provide an excellent setting for conducting a wide range of trials. The facilities also make it possible to conduct research in situations where the child or adolescent involved in a trial requires continuous inpatient care. We conduct trials in collaboration with HUS Pharmacy and the laboratory and imaging services.
We launch dozens of new trials every year. If you have an idea for research or development, please get in touch with us:
