Teamwork and open discussion are part of everyday work at Malmi Hospital’s internal medicine wards.

At Malmi Hospital, teamwork has been developed together with the staff for several years now. The need to build a teamwork culture arose when the wards moved to new premises in Malmi. The result was the award-winning “K.I.V.A duuni” job project, which is visible in the everyday life of internal medicine wards on a daily basis.

Having team coffees together provides the possibility to discuss and solve everyday issues

Good teamwork and working atmosphere are promoted by the team coaches on the wards together with the staff. The coaches participate in the orientation of new employees and students and lead the team coffee events on the wards.

“Our wards regularly organize team coffee events open to all professional groups. Having team coffees provide a forum for discussion and influencing, where everyday issues raised by employees are discussed and resolved. This supports a conversational work community culture,” says Maritta Lindholm, Nurse Director of Internal Medicine.

Nurse Laura Verho works as a team coach on ward 2. Team coffees have been useful on the ward, especially during the introduction of the Apotti system and the coronavirus pandemic.

“During the coronavirus pandemic, the personnel were busy and only had short breaks, which meant that there were very few encounters between the staff during that time. “Team sessions with coffee have been seen as an event where you can openly vent your feelings and make development suggestions in a safe discussion environment,” Verho explains.

Development is reflected in wellbeing at work

Staff on the internal medicine wards have learned to talk more openly with the development of teamwork. This is also reflected in reduced workloads as communication channels are open and the support of colleagues is readily available.

“It is easy to vent any daily occurrences straight away with your colleagues. This helps in not getting stuck in issues,” says Nurse Manager Jaana Ronkainen from Internal Medicine Inpatient Ward 4.

According to the Working Life Barometer survey commissioned by HUS in fall 2020, there is no experience of workplace harassment on the internal medicine wards at Malmi Hospital.

“This shows that the personnel feel heard and well-treated in our work community,” Lindholm is happy to remark.

The development of teamwork is currently also being kicked off on the internal medicine wards at Haartman Hospital with teamwork coaching to begin the process.
