Medical and psychiatric care of people with intellectual disability

We provide psychiatric consultations for people with intellectual disability through e-consultations, telephone and paper consultations, as well as examination and evaluation periods as traditional appointments in person. At the appointment, we diagnose intellectual disabilities and assess the mental health and challenging behavior of patients with intellectual disability. We provide advanced-level medication assessments, differential diagnostics in psychiatry, and expert assessments to support rehabilitation plans made by the patient’s wellbeing services county. In addition, we provide multiprofessional assessments in special cases of disability, such as autism spectrum disorders and multi-sensory impairment. We do not provide long-term follow-up care, and during the treatment contact with us, the overall treatment responsibility remains with the referring unit.

Our psychiatric consultations are for people of all ages with intellectual disability.

At Consulting in Intellectual Disabilities, we offer services implemented in the client’s daily environment. A doctor's referral is required for our services.

We provide guidance and advice for daily life. You can contact us when you need expertise in communication, daily life, behavior, sexuality, and substance abuse issues of people with intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, multi-sensory impairment, or other need for special support. We emphasize individuality, flexibility, and multiprofessional work.

We cover the entire HUS region, and our experts are available across the region.

Our team consists of psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, a physiotherapist, a speech therapist, rehabilitation instructors, practical nurses, and service planning specialists. 

Our consultations are for people of all ages with intellectual disability.

Our psychiatric inpatient care units for people with intellectual disability are units for advanced-level multiprofessional support as defined in the Special Care Act (Erityishuoltolaki). They are located in Lahti, Hämeenlinna, and Kerava. At our inpatient care units, we provide psychiatric treatment and examination periods for people with intellectual disability, as well as involuntary special care defined in the Special Care Act (Erityishuoltolaki), which may include, if necessary, restrictions defined in that act.

We admit patients with a doctor's referral as planned, and the client needs to have a valid special care program or a decision for providing special care made by an expert group for advanced-level multiprofessional support, in addition to a decision for advanced-level multiprofessional support as defined in section 16 of the Disability Services Act (Vammaispalvelulaki). Various professionals participate in the care during an inpatient period: practical nurses and registered nurses, a physician, psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist, and if needed, an autism rehabilitation instructor, AAC instructor, physiotherapist, and speech therapist.
