In the Department of Dermatopathology at Meilahti Skin and Allergy Hospital, we examine tissue samples taken from the skin, hair, nails, conjunctiva of the eye, and the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and genitals.
The laboratory at the Department of Dermatopathology examines skin samples from patients at Skin and Allergy Hospital, including immunofluorescence (IF) samples. Most of the samples are eczema and skin tumor biopsies taken from the skin. In some cases, the laboratory examines samples of skin and mucous membranes from the genitals and samples of hair (e.g. genodermatosis) and nails (e.g. pigmentation changes, eczema-related changes). Mohs surgical technique’s frozen section examinations are conducted monthly.
Two dermatopathologists work full-time in our laboratory to examine the samples in question. They are specialized in both pathology and skin diseases. Physicians can refer samples for consultation to the laboratory at the Department of Dermatopathology. The immunofluorescence (IF) sample is placed in a fluid transport medium, e.g. in a Michelin transport medium, where the sample is preserved for 5–7 days. Michelin sample tubes can be ordered in advance from the laboratory at the Department of Dermatopathology. There are also commercial transport media (e.g. Histocon) available.
