HUS year 2023: Strategy progress through focus areas

We are aiming for a future where we continue to deliver leading healthcare with improved effectiveness based on close collaboration between our personnel, the wellbeing services counties and the City of Helsinki along with other stakeholders. We can attain this goal through five strategic focus areas: customer experience; employee experience; cooperation with wellbeing services counties; continuous improvement and renewal; and sustainable finances.

Strategic measures for 2023

  • Customer experience
We introduced a new customer feedback system, defined customer experience indicators and assigned responsibilities, prepared a service pledge and devised a customer inclusion program.
  • Employee experience
We aim to be the most attractive workplace in Finland by improving wellbeing at work, the roles of supervisors, leadership and rewarding practices. We launched strategic HR planning in 2023. Evaluations of the Leadership Pulse and of the new employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) improved on 2022.
  • Cooperation with wellbeing services counties
We established joint operating models with the wellbeing services counties of Uusimaa and the City of Helsinki and drew up a cooperation model for preparation of the cooperation area (YTA) agreement.
  • Continuous improvement and renewal
We prepared roadmaps for teaching and research, introduced day-to-day leadership tools on 124 wards and decided to adopt the ISO 9001 quality system.
  • Sustainable economy
We created a financial planning and predictive model, introduced utilization rate monitoring for expensive equipment and introduced reporting automation. We assessed the condition of our properties and prepared an exit plan for leased premises. We created a model of the current state of our service network.

We prioritize transparency in our development efforts. Working with IT Management, we created a new development portfolio management model in the interests of transparency to engage the management of our core services to review the launch and progress of development projects in the organization. We also harmonized project management methods.

Other major development projects in 2023

  • Operating room allocation and service network analysis to investigate needs for surgery capacity and the service network.
  • We focused HR resources in the Strategy and Development Unit on specialist fields where there were issues with access to treatment. We managed to curb the growth of waiting lists.
