Substances, plants and mushrooms

The list contains the most frequently asked about and most common causes of poisoning in humans. You can search for items by typing in a search word. If you do not find the item you are looking for, you may call the Poison Information Center to check if it is poisonous.

Unfortunately, the Poison Information Center is not able to identify plants and mushrooms over the phone. Identification should always take place on the spot.

In addition to books on mushroom identification, mushroom experts can help you identify mushrooms. Experts can be found via mycological societies and the Martha Organization, for example.

Type

Explanation of symbols marked after the plant:

[F] = Phytophotodermatitis; sap or juice from the plant may cause skin symptoms, such as blisters, after exposure to sunlight.

[K] = The plant is non-toxic in moderate amounts or when properly prepared.

Plant causes topical irritation = Sap or juice from the plant may cause irritation (such as stinging) on the skin and in the mouth. Does not absorb into the body.

Cigarettes

Substances

Children over the age of 1 year: Ingesting less than one whole cigarette or three cigarette butts does not require treatment. Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur. If the ingested amount is greater, contact the Poison Information Centre.

Nicotine poses the greatest risk to children under the age of 1. Contact the Poison Information Centre to confirm toxicity.

Citric acid

Substances

Citric acid itself is not corrosive. If the child has ingested a small gulp, rinse the mouth.

Clitocybe -species (Clitocybe)

Mushrooms

Many Clitocybe –species contain muscarine, which cause symptoms in the nervous system. The symptoms usually begin within 30 min-2 hours. Sweating, increased salivation, lacrimation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are the typical symptoms.

Ingestion of a small amount (less than 2-3 cubes of sugar) does not require any treatment. If ingested in greater amounts administer activated charcoal and seek medical assistance. Contact the Poison Information Center if someone has ingested Clitocybe -species. Save the mushroom for possible identification afterwards.

Common ink cap (Coprinus atramentarius)

Mushrooms

Common ink cap is edible. It can cause antabuse-like reactions (for example flushed face, nausea and palpitations), if consumed with alcohol. If ingestion with alcohol is suspected, contact the Poison Information Center. Save the mushroom for possible identification afterwards.

Contraceptive pills

Substances

A single dose is considered harmless. Does not require treatment.

Corrosive substances

Substances

Keywords: sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, lye, soda, base

Orally: Rinse the mouth. If the person develops symptoms such as difficulties in swallowing, increased salivation, vomiting or abdominal pains, seek immediate medical assistance.

Skin and Eye: Rinse the skin and eyes immediately with water for 30-60 minutes. If pain, photophobia or other symptoms occur in the eye, seek medical assistance.

Corticosteroids (cortisone)

Substances

Keywords: Hydrocortisone, Hydrocortison®, Prednisolon®, Prednison®

A single dose of cortisone tablets or cream is considered harmless. In large amounts, creams may cause gastrointestinal symptoms. Does not require treatment.

Cyanoacrylate glue

Substances

Keywords: super glue, instant adhesive glue

It is almost impossible to swallow cyanoacrylate glue. The adhesive solidifies and adheres to the inside of the mouth. No special treatment is usually required, because saliva will lift the adhesive in 12 to 48 hours. It is possible to accelerate this by gently brushing the insides of the mouth with a soft toothbrush.

Adhesive attached to the skin can be removed by using a brush, warm water and soap: Immerse the glued areas in warm soapy water and peel gently apart. Do not try to rip or tear the skin apart by force.

Rinse eyes thoroughly for at least 15 minutes. If the eyelids are stuck, apply a wet gauze patch, for example, over the eyes. Do not try to force the eyes open. If adhesive is attached to the retina, it will usually dissociate in a couple of hours. Have a physician or eye specialist check the eyes to ensure there is no damage.

Deadly webcap (Cortinarius rubellus)

Mushrooms

Deadly webcap is a deadly poisonous mushroom, which can cause kidney failure. Usually symptoms occur 3 days after ingestion (onset of the symptoms range from 12 hours to 14 days). Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and excessive thirst are typical symptoms in the beginning.

Ingestion of a small amount (less than a cube of sugar) does not require any treatment. If the ingested amount is more than a cube of sugar, administer activated charcoal and seek medical assistance. Contact the Poison Information Center if someone has ingested Deadly webcap. Save the mushroom for possible identification afterwards.

Death cap (Amanita phalloides)

Mushrooms

Death cap is a deadly poisonous mushroom, which can cause liver failure. Usually symptoms begin within 6-24 hours after ingestion. The typical symptoms in the beginning are severe abdominal pain, vomiting and watery diarrhea.

Ingestion of a small amount (less than a cube of sugar) does not require any treatment. If the ingested amount is more than a cube of sugar, administer activated charcoal and seek medical assistance. Contact the Poison Information Center if someone has ingested Death cap. Save the mushroom for possible identification afterwards.
