Salvia building

We are building a new multifunctional building in Meilahti for our hospital pharmacy and kitchen. Construction began in spring 2025 and will last approximately four years.

The new building, which will rise next to New Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital, will provide facilities for HUS’s central support services: high-quality pharmaceutical services and food services. The new facilities will allow us to maintain our high quality of services and meet growing demand.

The construction project has been classified as urgent. The hospital pharmacy and kitchen are currently located in outdated facilities whose technical systems have reached the end of their lifecycle. In addition, the current facilities no longer fully meet regulatory requirements. Constructing new facilities is essential for maintaining our medicines, patient, and occupational safety. It is also difficult and costly to add pharmacy facilities, especially cleanrooms for pharmaceutical production, to old buildings.

Pharmaceutical production facilities to ensure patients’ individual needs

The main functions of our hospital pharmacy are tendering and procurement of medicines, supplying and manufacturing medicines, and providing expert services in pharmacotherapy and pharmaceutical logistics. The new facilities will enable the controlled centralization of our pharmacy operations, as well as the streamlining and improvement of processes through automation.

The hospital pharmacy manufactures medicines to ensure treatment for patients when a commercial product is not available. To support this, we are building modern, regulation-compliant production facilities that will allow us to meet even the most demanding patient needs.

With the expanded and modernized pharmaceutical production facilities, we will be able to increase production volumes. This will strengthen our ability to meet the needs of care units and support the implementation of pharmacotherapy in patient care.

The new facilities will also enable smoother pharmaceutical logistics processes and more efficient inventory management, improving preparedness. The building will include service points for clinical trial medication services and for dispensing certain outpatient medicines to patients.

Efficient and modern facilities for food services

Food plays a central role in the wellbeing of our patients and staff. The new building will have modern food preparation and storage areas, as well as a new lunch restaurant aimed primarily at our staff. The Breast Milk Center will also operate in the new building.

The Salvia building's new kitchen facilities will meet modern requirements. We will continue to produce nutritious and varied meals for patients, taking different diets into account. Preparing food in the new production kitchen will be even more efficient and sustainable.
