Psychiatric consultation

Outside of regular office hours, we refer requests for on-call psychiatric consultations to the physician on call at the Psychiatry Center.

The reason for referring a patient for a psychiatric consultation or treatment must be primarily related to the patient’s somatic symptoms or illness, or to somatic examinations or treatments. Reasons for referrals often include an acute mental health crisis, an assessment of mental status and the need for further psychiatric care, a differential diagnosis issue, or assessment of a person’s mental work ability. For psychiatric problems not related to the patient’s somatic condition, the patient should be referred to regional psychiatric services.

Our clinic collaborates with somatic units through care consultations and training, among other things. Psychiatric consultation may be conducted by either a physician or a psychiatric nurse. The decision to refer a patient for a psychiatric consultation is made by the physician responsible for the patient’s somatic care, in agreement with the patient.

The parent or guardian of a child or adolescent who is being treated for a somatic illness at HUS’ New Children’s Hospital may be referred for a consultation at our clinic if the parent or guardian is experiencing severe psychiatric symptoms that acutely jeopardize the child’s or adolescent’s somatic care or well-being during their care.
