Neuropsychological Assessment and Rehabilitation
Keywords:Neuropsychological assessment helps us understand how the brain processes information, regulates emotions, and guides behavior. The assessment evaluates whether there have been changes in these functions, how significant they are, and how they affect a person’s functional capacity.
With a neuropsychological assessment, we can evaluate, for example, a person’s capacity for work, study, independent daily living, or driving, as well as identify strengths in cognitive functioning. The assessment often also includes an evaluation of both rehabilitation needs and potential benefits of rehabilitation.
In a neuropsychological assessment, we can examine cognitive functions such as attention, memory, language, and visual perception, as well as emotion regulation and behavior. We also evaluate current life circumstances and other background factors that may influence functioning.
Neuropsychological assessment may be needed, for example, to:
- evaluate changes caused by neurological diseases and injuries, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, epilepsy, or multiple sclerosis
- identify progressive memory disorders
- assess changes resulting from other medical conditions or symptoms, such as post-resuscitation state
- assess work or study ability
- determine rehabilitation needs and assess the effects of rehabilitation received
- evaluate developmental language disorders and severe difficulties in reading and writing
- investigate neuropsychological characteristics associated with developmental neuropsychiatric disorders
Neuropsychological rehabilitation
Neuropsychological rehabilitation is based on a neuropsychologist’s evaluation of rehabilitation needs and is arranged with a referral from a physician.
Rehabilitation may be needed for neuropsychological conditions, such as after sudden cerebrovascular events, e.g. stroke or brain hemorrhage, or traumatic brain injuries. The aim of neuropsychological rehabilitation is to reduce the impact of changes in cognitive functioning, emotion regulation, and behavior caused by brain dysfunction.
Through rehabilitation, we aim to improve and maintain functional and work capacity, enhance quality of life, and support adaptation to difficulties. Neuropsychological rehabilitation is based on the understanding that cognitive functions are linked to brain activity and that neural networks are capable of adapting, making learning and recovery possible.
