Prostate cancer treatment consultation meeting

At the appointment, you will receive information from the urologist on the biopsy classification as well as the extent and risk category of your diagnosed cancer. We will introduce you to the treatment options and recommended therapies. Together with the urologist, you will decide on the appropriate form of treatment for you.

If necessary, your physician will refer you to the Comprehensive Cancer Center so that you can also discuss the most appropriate treatment option with a radiation oncologist.

What happens during a treatment consultation?

In the treatment consultation, we will examine your state of health. In addition to the disease itself, the choice of treatment depends on your wishes, age, general condition, other illnesses, and possible previous treatments for different diseases. The choice of treatment is also influenced by the adverse effects of the treatments. You should know the pros and cons of different treatments before making a treatment decision. We recommend that you involve a family member in the treatment consultation meetings.

At the end of the treatment consultations, we will either place you on the waiting list for surgery, make a referral to the HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center to start radiation therapy, or start active monitoring or hormone therapy, depending on the treatment decision.

After the treatment consultation, if necessary, we will send your treatment decision to a multiprofessional treatment meeting that convenes once a week, where in addition to the urologist, there will be oncologists, a radiologist, a pathologist, and a prostate cancer nurse. We will review your examination results and medical records again in the meeting. After the multiprofessional treatment meeting, we will notify you of our treatment recommendation.

Meeting with a nurse  

After the treatment consultation, you will meet with a nurse. Patients scheduled for surgery will either meet with a physiotherapist or be enrolled in the “Digital care pathway for prostate cancer patients”. The nurse will review the chosen treatment option and its adverse effects with you. You will receive instructions concerning treatment and contact information for the healthcare provider treating you.

Meeting with a prostate cancer nurse

If you wish, you can also meet with a prostate cancer nurse, with whom you can discuss treatment options and their adverse effects, as well as get more information about prostate cancer, examination results, and follow-up.

With the prostate cancer nurse, you can discuss anything related to prostate cancer at all stages of your illness. Counseling can also be given by telephone. A prostate cancer nurse will support, provide information and guide you and your loved ones in accordance with your needs.
