Appointments with a physician and a nurse in the diagnosing of prostate cancer
At the appointment, you will receive information from the urologist on the biopsy classification as well as the extent and risk category of your diagnosed cancer. We will introduce you to the treatment options and recommended therapies. Together with the urologist, you will decide on the appropriate form of treatment for you.
In the treatment consultation, we will examine your state of health. In addition to the disease itself, the choice of treatment depends on your wishes, age, general condition, other illnesses, and possible previous treatments for different diseases. The choice of treatment is also influenced by the adverse effects of the treatments. You should know the pros and cons of different treatments before making a treatment decision. We recommend that you involve your loved ones in the treatment consultation meetings.
At the end of the treatment consultations, we will either place you on the waiting list for surgery, make a referral to HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center to start radiation therapy, or start active monitoring or hormone therapy, depending on the treatment decision.
After the treatment consultation, if necessary, we will send your treatment decision to a multi-professional treatment meeting that meets once a week, where in addition to the urologist, there is a radiologist, an oncologist, a radiotherapy doctor, a pathologist, and a prostate cancer nurse. Your examination results and medical records will be reviewed there. You will be notified of a treatment recommendation after the multi-professional treatment meeting.
After the treatment consultation, you will meet with a nurse or prostate cancer nurse. Patients undergoing surgery meet with a physiotherapist either immediately after the treatment consultation or later before the surgery. The nurse will review the selected form of treatment and its adverse effects with you. You will receive instructions concerning treatment and contact information for the unit responsible for your care.
If you wish, you can also meet with a prostate cancer nurse, with whom you can discuss treatment options and their adverse effects, as well as get more information about prostate cancer, examination results, and follow-up. An appointment with a prostate cancer nurse is free of charge in connection with the treatment consultation.
With the prostate cancer nurse, you can discuss anything related to prostate cancer at all stages of your illness. Counseling can also be given by telephone. A prostate cancer nurse will support, provide information and guide you and your loved ones in accordance with your needs.
