HUS is progressing toward group-wide ISO 9001 quality certification

HUS is building an organization-wide ISO 9001 quality management system in 2024–2027.
On March 25, 2026, the first units using the organization-wide quality management system have been granted ISO 9001 certification. The project launched in 2024 has progressed well. Half of HUS units are now ISO 9001 certified, in line with the planned schedule.
“We have strong confidence that the quality management system will bring benefits to our operations and to the harmonization of practices in a large organization. The certificate is an important acknowledgement that our operations meet the requirements of an international quality standard. We are well prepared for the certification of our entire organization,” says HUS CEO Matti Bergendahl.
An external ISO 9001 audit carried out in December 2025 commended HUS for its development-oriented approach and for the way the quality system is genuinely embedded in daily operations and management.
The certificate is a joint achievement
The certification process required broad and close co-operation within HUS. The quality management system based on the ISO 9001 standard provides a uniform structure for harmonizing practices and strengthening management of patient care and its support services as well as continuous development.
“We streamlined, among other things, our document-management procedures and extensive set of guidelines, established regular management reviews, and drew up a shared quality policy. We also trained our personnel in the principles of the quality management system and in the common operating practices,” says Leena Koponen, director of the quality management system project at HUS.
HUS has worked with strong commitment in developing the shared quality management system. Success has been made possible by leadership support at all levels and by the strong foundation of earlier work in quality management.
“Working together has been inspiring, and our professionals have been bold in bringing up issues to be resolved together. We’ve also learned valuable practices from each other along the way,” says Koponen.
Work continues toward organization-wide quality management system
The development of the quality management system will continue throughout 2026. Some units will bring their already accredited or certified systems into the shared framework. The goal is to achieve an organization-wide certification for all of HUS at the beginning of 2027.
