HUS took over the presidency of the leading European university hospitals on November 21, 2025, at the Members’ Assembly held at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.
“The presidency is a great honor for us and an excellent opportunity to deepen our collaboration with other EUHA members and to influence the alliance’s priorities and operating models. It also gives us a unique vantage point as the representative of an alliance of 11 leading university hospitals at international forums,” says HUS CEO Matti Bergendahl
HUS CEO Bergendahl will act as the president of EUHA's highest governing body, the Member's Assembly, and represent the alliance at international forums. For the next six months, HUS will also take on the responsibility of president of the Steering Committee, which oversees and coordinates EUHA’s operational activities.
The EUHA presidency will culminate in the Members’ Assembly in May 2026
The highlight of HUS’ EUHA presidency will be the events hosted in Helsinki in May 2026. “We expect around 100–120 international guests to attend the Members’ Assembly and the surrounding events,” says Matti Bergendahl, the president of the meeting.
The theme for our presidency is “inspired professionals”, highlighting the vital role of skilled and motivated professionals in shaping the future of healthcare. “We are planning a symposium around this theme to take place alongside the Members’ Assembly,” says Bergendahl.
EUHA is currently undergoing a strategic update with the primary goal to define the alliance’s focus areas more precisely and to agree on clear roles, responsibilities, and operating models that will ensure smooth implementation of the updated strategy.
The key goal of the Helsinki Members’ Assembly will be to secure formal approval for this updated strategy. “By achieving this goal, we can hand over the presidency to Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris with confidence, knowing they will have a strong foundation to advance the alliance’s work during their term,” says Bergendahl.
HUS marks its first year as an EUHA member – An excellent welcome
HUS was invited to join EUHA in November 2024. ”We have been welcomed exceptionally well and have received particular praise for our active engagement, introducing fresh perspectives, and appropriately challenging established practices,” says Bergendahl.
Collaboration has begun in many areas. HUS has shown pioneership in areas such as data production and the adoption of artificial intelligence, application of medical and diagnostic device regulations (MDR/IVDR), and initiatives aimed at improving healthcare effectiveness.
