Flowers are no longer allowed in HUS hospitals

Plants and flowers are forbidden in all facilities where patients are treated. Flowers have been popular gifts, especially at the maternity wards.
The flower ban is not an entirely new restriction. Until now, flowers have been forbidden in some of the hospitals at Meilahti campus, but from now on, flowers are not allowed in any HUS hospitals.
Flowers and plants are forbidden because the soil and water they need may increase the risk of infections and impair indoor air quality. Additionally, the plants and their pots and vases collect dust and hinder cleaning.
“If you wish to brighten your loved one’s day with flowers, we recommend doing so after they have been discharged,” says Katariina Kainulainen, chief physician at HUS Infection Control and Epidemiological Unit.
