Ear Hospital will now be named Corner Hospital
Keywords:Ear Hospital in Meilahti (formerly Eye and Ear Hospital) will be renamed Corner Hospital. The new name will be adopted immediately.
The purpose of the name change is to clear any confusion caused by the name regarding current operations. Since late May 2026, the hospital has housed the HUS Prenatal Diagnostic Unit as well as nurse directors and experts from Gynecology and Obstetrics.
The building was empty for about a year when Ophthalmology moved to Oak Hospital in Spring 2025. Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases moved from the building to Surgical Hospital in 2020.
The language versions of the name in Finnish, Swedish, and English are:
- Kulmasairaala
- Vinkelsjukhuset
- Corner Hospital
New name refers to the shape of the building
Corner Hospital is named after the shape of the building. When viewed from above, the building has a right-angle shape forming a corner and the main entrance is located in the building's inner corner. In Meilahti, other buildings named after their shape include Tower Hospital, Triangle Hospital and Bridge Hospital.
HUS hospitals and buildings have been systematically given general names that are not tied to any specific medical specialty or operation. This ensures that the name remains usable even if the operations in the building change in the future.
