Proceeding according to plan
Increase the percentage of renewable energy in our functions, including a solar power plan, use of geothermal energy, transitioning from natural gas to biogas, fuel oil replacement options. (Metric: Increase percentage of renewable energy in energy consumed, Increase own production of renewable energy) Two solar power plants completed, bringing HUS solar power generation capacity up to about 200 MWh per year. The electricity consumed by HUS is certified to have been generated using renewable energy. Renewable energy accounts for about 46% of all energy consumed. Proceeding according to plan
Explore improving the flexibility of usage and adaptation for premises from an energy conservation perspective. Facility booking systems piloted at selected sites In preparation
Develop remote work opportunities and remote appointments. (Metric: Remote work guideline completed) The updated remote work guideline has been published. Remote appointments have been developed as part of HUS strategic projects. Completed / targets met
Smart mobility Improve potential for employees to commute and travel for work by cycling, walking and public transport instead of driving. (Metric: Increase in the percentage of sustainable mobility used, to be gauged in 2024) Bicycle parking spaces added on hospital campuses. In 2021, an access-controlled, covered bicycle parking facility was completed at Peijas along with a bicycle shelter at Hyvinkää, round-the-year and summer-use bike stands allowing frame locks at Meilahti and summer use bike stands allowing frame locks at the Surgical Hospital. Participation in publicity campaigns promoting sustainable mobility. Proceeding according to plan
Increase the use of alternative motive power (e.g. electricity) in our own vehicle procurement and in our use of transport services. (Metric: Vehicle policy completed) The draft vehicle policy is being circulated for comment. A study of charging points for electric vehicles on the Meilahti campus has been conducted. Needs catching up in timetable / targets
Climate change impacts Ensure that key climate change impacts (e.g. heavy rains, storms, heat waves and humidity) are considered in the safety and rescue plans of hospitals. (Metric: Safety and rescue plans updated) Updates to the safety and rescue plans of our properties are being made in keeping with the update cycle for each property. In preparation
Guidelines are being updated to ensure that climate change impacts are considered in construction and repair projects. (Metric: Updates completed) Guideline update plan drafting and guideline updating postponed to 2022 Not started
2) Prudent resource management and the circular economy at HUS
Recycling and reducing waste Reduce food waste, including expanding Hävikkimestari activities and patient food selection; improve effectiveness of portion size orders. (Metric: Hävikkimestarit system in use, patient food selection model completed Dec 2021. Reducing the volume of biowaste by hospital) Food waste has been reduced by an average of 15% to 20%, and the Hävikkimestarit system is in widespread use.  Portion sizes can now be selected in Apotti. Overall, the volume of biowaste generated by HUS has decreased by 18%, but it has increased at some hospitals. Also, there is still work to be done in the consistency of waste quantity reporting between hospitals. Proceeding according to plan
Enhance recycling of plastic and other recyclable fractions, including delivery of effective plastic collection at all sites and lobbying for recycling emblems on plastic products. (Metric: Reducing mixed waste to 1.13 kg per patient visit, increasing volume of plastic recycled by hospital) Plastic sorting facilities added at some hospitals, and recycling opportunities investigated at others. The total volume of waste increased by 19%, but at some hospitals the figure was slightly less than in the previous year. The volume of mixed waste grew slightly from last year’s 1.17 kg per patient visit to 1.18 kg per patient visit. Proceeding according to plan
Improve instructions and user-friendliness at recycling points (including service design) and the consistency of waste management, including the range of waste containers provided, the organization of waste rooms and waste disposal guidelines for departments. (Metric: Waste management effectiveness ranked as ‘good’ in the customer satisfaction survey) Preparations for the project to make recycling points more user-friendly have begun. The customer satisfaction ranking for waste management is ‘fairly good’. In preparation
Sustainable procurements Focus more on ecological criteria for products and services procured. (Metric: Environmental criteria applied in at least 60% of all tendering processes) Responsibility criteria applied in 12% of all tendering processes. Needs catching up in timetable / targets
Identify procurements in each category that have the greatest potential for boosting sustainability aspects. Engage in market dialogue to improve environmental performance. (Metric: Category planning in progress) 5/7 of procurement categories reviewed Needs catching up in timetable / targets
