HUS Environment Agency coordinates environmental policy at HUS. At HUS Logistics, we implement the HUS corporate environmental responsibility goals through our sustainability team. Our corporate environmental responsibility efforts are governed by the HUS environmental policy, the HUS environmental program and the HUS procurement strategy.

Reducing energy consumption and emissions

HUS Logistics Center covered 12 % of its energy needs with solar power in the year under review.

The HUS Logistics Centre building has an energy efficiency classification of ‘A’, with an imputed total energy consumption of about 74 kWh per sq.m per annum. The building has geothermal heating. Electricity purchased from Vantaan Energia for lighting and equipment totaled 488 MWh in 2021, slightly more than in the previous year. Total consumption also increased on the previous year, to 540 MWh.

On the other hand, for the second year now, solar power production has reduced the amount of purchased electricity. The amount of solar power produced in 2021 was on a par with the previous year at. 52 MWh.  In other words, HUS Logistics Center covered about 12% of its energy needs with solar power in the year under review. This is somewhat more than was estimated when the solar panel installation was being planned (the estimate being 50 MWh per annum). The solar energy is used for instance to run the geothermal heating and cooling system of the building and for lighting.

Reducing waste

Plastic collection became even more effective in 2021.

In 2021, the total volume of waste at HUS Logistics Center was 72.5 tons, of which 40% was mixed waste. The total volume of waste and the percentage of mixed waste increased on 2020.

In 2021, the volume of plastic waste generated was 12.6 tons, about 45% more than in 2020. This had the effect of reducing the percentage of mixed waste.

The percentage of biowaste out of all waste remained about the same as in 2020, while the volume of paper and board decreased slightly in 2020.
