Neuropsychiatric disorders in children
Keywords:At HUS we examine and treat children with neuropsychiatric disorders.
Children’s neuropsychiatric disorders are developmental brain disorders that manifest themselves actions and behaviors typical for each particular disorder. Neuropsychiatric conditions affect areas such as social interaction, linguistic and non-linguistic communication, emotional and behavioral control, and control over one’s own actions. Symptoms tend to vary from one child to another, and even the same child may present with a different symptom profile at various stages of development. Neuropsychiatric disorders are often accompanied by challenges with sleep, learning, language development and motor skills, and by mood swings, anxiety or compulsiveness, and sensory processing sensitivity. Neuropsychiatric disorders include ADHD, autistic spectrum disorders and tic disorders.
We evaluate children comprehensively and customize our treatment and support responses.
ADHD and mild tic disorder symptoms can be diagnosed in school health care or at a health center, or in specialist medical care if necessary. At HUS, we perform diagnostic examinations for autistic spectrum disorders and for severe tic disorders.
After our diagnostic evaluation and possibly a course of treatment or rehabilitation, further care can be provided by school health care, student welfare services or the local health center.
