Children's cancer
Keywords:AT HUS, we treat all types of children’s cancers. In Finland, 130–150 children and adolescents develop cancer every year. We treat approximately a third of them at New Children's Hospital.
The most common cancer in children is acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which affects about 15 children annually in the Uusimaa region. Treatment of ALL lasts 2–2.5 years. The second most common form of cancer in children is a malignant brain tumor. Other cancers in children include neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor (childhood nephroblastoma), and osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
Our treatment results for childhood cancers are among the best in the world. Our ALL treatment results are the best in the world, with 98% of patients being cured.
We treat cancer with cytotoxic drug treatments, surgery, and radiotherapy in various combinations. In addition, we perform stem cell transplantations. We also give CAR-T cell therapy at New Children's Hospital.
Important forms of care associated with cancer treatment include prevention of nausea, pain management, addressing malnutrition, post-operative care, and prevention and treatment of infections. Medical care alone is not sufficient in treating cancer – it needs to be supported by high-quality nursing and a high level of care. Our grown-up patients will be directed for post-operative monitoring at the Follow-up Outpatient Clinic in HUS Comprehensive Cancer Center.
A child or an adolescent developing cancer affects the whole family and changes their entire life. We provide comprehensive treatment for children and adolescents with cancer and their entire families. Our personnel help families to adapt to the situation and provide support and advice to them.
