Appointment with a physician and a nurse in the diagnosing of cancers in the head and neck area

Planning your treatment begins with an appointment with a cancer specialist or surgeon. At the appointment, we will go through your examination results, the diagnosed disease and its treatment options. We will go through the treatment options regarding their benefits and disadvantages. Your physician will plan the necessary further examinations and the treatment you have opted for together.

If necessary, the physician will also make a referral for other support measures, such as nutritional therapy, physiotherapy, or services at the Palliative Care Unit or Psychosocial Support Unit.

The nurses will accompany you in all the different stages of your illness

During appointments, a nurse and physician work as a team. You will meet a nurse at your first visit. If necessary, we will refer you to a nurse’s appointment for guidance or advice also during your other visits.

If your treatment includes medication in tablet form, we will guide and monitor the progress of your treatment at the nurse’s appointment. We also arrange follow-up visits as appointments with the nurse. If necessary, you can meet the nurses in connection with a physician’s appointments. You can contact them via your treatment unit.

The primary nurse at the Comprehensive Cancer Center’s pharmacotherapy unit ensures that it is safe to administer cancer medication for you and that you know how your treatment will continue. In matters related to cancer medication, you can contact your primary nurse directly by phone or through the Noona app and the Maisa portal.

The outpatient clinic's nurses and primary nurses will accompany you throughout your treatment, and they form a link between you and the hospital at different stages of your illness.
