Consumption of purchased electricity at the Logistics Center decreased on the previous year in 2020, as did the volume of mixed waste.
HUS environmental policy is coordinated by the HUS Environment Center. At HUS Logistics, we implement the HUS corporate environmental responsibility goals through our sustainability team. Our corporate environmental responsibility efforts are governed by the HUS environmental policy, the HUS environmental program and the HUS procurement strategy.
Reducing energy consumption and emissions
The HUS Logistics Centre building has an energy efficiency classification of ‘A’, with an imputed total energy consumption of about 74 kWh per sq.m per annum. The building has geothermal heating. Electricity purchased from Vantaan Energia for lighting and equipment totaled 458 MWh in 2020, 5.5% less than in 2019. Consumption of purchased electricity thus decreased for the second year running, even though our volume of operations and number of employees increased. This achievement in 2020 was facilitated by our in-house production of solar power, generating 54.4 MWh of electricity. In other words, HUS Logistics Center covered about 12% of its energy needs with solar power in the year under review. This is somewhat more than was estimated when the solar panel installation was being planned (the estimate being 50 MWh per annum). The solar energy is used for instance to run the geothermal heating and cooling system of the building and for lighting.

Reducing waste
In 2020, HUS Logistics generated about 62 tons of waste in all, mixed waste accounting for about 33% of the total. By comparison, the percentage of mixed waste was more than 50% in 2018. The volume of mixed waste slightly increased in comparison to 2019 in relative terms, but the volume was considerably lower than in the two years before that. Plastics waste collection was introduced at the Logistics Centre warehouse and in personnel break rooms in 2019. The volume of plastic waste in 2020 was 8.6 tons, which is only half of what it was in 2019. This contributed to the reduction in the volume of mixed waste. Collection of paper, board and biowaste was also boosted during the year under review, which further significantly reduced the percentage of mixed waste.
