In 2019, HUS productivity declined on the previous year.

Up until 2019, productivity was measured at HUS using DRG point cost. As of 2020, productivity will be measured as cost per patient.

The target for 2019 was for the deflated DRG point cost to decrease by 1.5%. Instead, the DRG point cost increased by 1.2%, indicating a decline in productivity. Productivity declined because costs increased more than the DRG point total.

Costs increased by 10.2%, while the DRG point total increased by 7.2%. Deflation was calculated using the price index for public local government expenditure, multiplying the previous year’s costs by the coefficient 1.016.

Costs were increased for instance by ballooning IT system costs related to the Apotti patient and customer information system, additional personnel and wage increases, rising medical and pharmaceutical costs, major facilities projects, rents and transfers of functions.

Psychiatry productivity improved

At HUS, the productivity trend of psychiatry is measured by dividing the actual total costs in Psychiatry with the number of patients treated. These costs (deflated) decreased by 2.6% on the previous year, so productivity in Psychiatry improved.

Cost per patient decreased

In 2019, productivity was also measured by changes in cost per patient and by changes in the ratio of costs to operating volume. Cost per patient (deflated) decreased by 2.2% compared to the same time in 2018, but costs relative to operating volume (deflated) increased by 9.4%.

DRG point cost

Medical service production, excluding psychiatry, known as somatic service production, is productized into DRG products and is made commensurate using DRG points. Labor productivity and overall productivity trends are measured in somatic service production using NordDRG productivity indicators. The DRG point cost is calculated by dividing the actual costs by the number of DRG costs accrued from production. When the DRG point cost drops, productivity improves and, correspondingly, when the DRG point cost rises, productivity declines.   Productivity program
