Medical imaging procedures and radionuclide therapies

Keywords:
  • radionuclide therapy
  • radioisotope scan
  • clinical physiology and nuclear medicine

Imaging equipment and methods allow us to treat certain diseases and perform certain procedures on patients.

A nurse is preparing a PET-MRI-machine.

With the procedures performed by imaging specialists, or radiologists, we can support surgery and partially replace vascular surgery. Radiologists can perform, for example, balloon dilatation procedures. In these procedures, they utilize imaging equipment or methods to assist them.

And radionuclide therapies are used especially to treat cancers, but also to treat, for example, hyperthyroidism. Radionuclide therapies utilize radioactive drugs, and therapies are used in close connection with imaging utilizing certain special techniques (such as PET-CT and SPECT-CT).

The effect of radionuclide therapies is based on the fact that the radioactive substance finds it way to the cancer cell and destroys the cell with radiation which is very localized.
