We use donated breast milk to feed small and ill newborn infants at our hospitals.

Breast milk is natural nutrition for an infant in the first months of life. In the treatment of preterm babies and of certain illnesses, breast milk is nearly a necessity. Our hospitals’ demand for breast milk can only be secured with the help of nursing mothers who are willing to donate their excess milk.

You can start donating breast milk if you have given birth less than two months ago. Donors must be approved by a senior ward physician in neonatology in the New Children's Hospital, and we accept milk only after it has been examined. We do not accept milk frozen at home before the examinations.

A driver picks up breast milk from donors’ homes once a week in the Capital Region (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa). We also accept breast milk from other regions, but the donor is responsible for the transport.

For advice on breast milk donation, please contact our Breast Milk Center on weekdays between 07:00 and 14:00, tel. 09 471 73737 or 050 407 0025 or aidinmaitokeskus@hus.fi.
