A relative of a patient with renal disease may donate one of their kidneys to the patient. For example, the patient's parents, siblings or spouse may act as a donor. In HUS, organ donation activities are coordinated by the family transplant coordinator at our Transplantation Services.

The number of patients with renal disease is increasing in Finland. One major reason for this is diabetes and the kidney damage it causes. On the other hand, there are still too few renal transplantations performed, and the number of patients on the transfer waiting list has been increasing.

We are aiming to increase the number of family transplants in order to find a suitable kidney for an increasing number of patients with renal disease.
