Most of the treatments in this specialist area consist of operations and other surgical procedures, but we also partly manage the evaluation, planning and execution of non-surgical treatments for the aforementioned conditions. We usually deal with non-urgent cases, while traumatology – treatment of injuries – mainly has to do with emergency outpatient care. The majority of all surgical procedures performed in Finland fall within the domain of orthopedics and traumatology, which thus is the largest surgical specialist area. The most common procedures in orthopedic and traumatology specialties include endoscopy-assisted joint surgery, prosthetic joint replacement surgery, surgery to repair fractures, reconstructive surgery due to illness, and surgery for illnesses or injuries in the spinal region. Non-surgical treatment involves installing various splints and braces. ## Patient groups requiring the most demanding care and treatment The most demanding treatments in our field have to do with acute care and aftercare for patients with severe accident trauma and with the treatment of advanced arthrosis of the spine, joints, or limbs. ## Outpatient care Typical cases that we treat in outpatient care include fractures of the limbs caused by accidents (ankle, wrist, hip, shoulder) and other sudden and unexpected conditions such as severe nerve compression symptoms caused by a prolapsed disc in the spine. ## Care facilities We offer services in the orthopedics and traumatology specialist area at Meilahti Bridge hospital, Herttoniemi, Peijas and Jorvi Hospitals for the Helsinki University Hospital area and at Hyvinkää, Lohja, Raseborg and Porvoo Hospitals for the rest of Uusimaa. The most demanding traumatology surgery and surgical treatment of bone tumors at HUS are centrally managed at Töölö Hospital.
