Coronavirus testing ended earlier than anticipated. In 2023, some 60% of the operating revenue of the Diagnostic Center came from internal clients at HUS and the remainder from the City of Helsinki and from the wellbeing services counties of Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso and South Karelia. Among IT projects, we completed the MY+ deployment project for pathology and microbiology. The digipathology project and the procurement of the Digi-EKG system for clinical physiology progressed according to plan. The deployment of Finland’s largest X-ray unit at the Bridge Hospital went well, and personnel are happy with the new premises. The relocation of laboratories at Jorvi Hospital and at Kymenlaakso Central Hospital to new premises went well. ### Read more [HUS renews its digital ECG system](/node/6200) ## Personnel situation better than before the pandemic The personnel situation improved in 2023, being better at the end of the year than before the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. On average, there were six applicants for each vacancy. ## Service production increased and waiting times for imaging examinations shortened In 2023, service production of the Diagnostic Center grew, and waiting times for imaging examinations shortened. Physicians in primary healthcare were particularly satisfied with the services provided by the Diagnostic Center, but they did wish for more training and guidance on how to select and use diagnostic examinations in various patient groups. ## Coronavirus testing ended earlier than anticipated In 2023, coronavirus testing was transferred to normal diagnostics as the extensive population testing introduced for epidemic control was discontinued. This was done despite the fact that there was a high number of coronavirus patients in hospitals in autumn 2023 and the mortality rate in the population was at a record high. Because coronavirus testing was discontinued earlier than expected, about EUR 55 million of the revenue budgeted was never received. The Diagnostics Center showed a deficit because of this, even though the unit’s costs remained under budget. ## PET magnetic imaging device acquired for nuclear medicine We acquired a PET magnetic imaging device for nuclear medicine to expedite and improve our service process, for instance in children’s cancer treatments, children’s epilepsy surgery and treatment of cancers of the urinary and reproductive organs. This procurement is consistent with our strategic goal of continuous improvement and renewal.
