Bridge Hospital’s Neurosurgery Outpatient Clinic S3 is an appointment only outpatient clinic where patients come with referral. In addition to physician’s appointments, our outpatient clinic provides appointments with a neuromodulation nurse, preoperative appointments for patients arriving for surgery, and appointment scheduling for neurosurgery.

In the specialty of neurosurgery, we treat patients with illnesses associated with the head and spine. The most common diseases we treat are brain tumors, cerebral hemorrhages, cerebrovascular diseases, brain injuries, epilepsy, and back area tumors and disk protrusions.

In addition, we treat patients with muscle stiffness as well as pain patients and Parkinson’s patients with functional neurosurgery (pump and stimulator installations).

Below we have compiled Frequently Asked Questions for the Neurosurgery Outpatient Clinic.

## Issues concerning referrals

### How do I become a patient in your unit?

---

All neurosurgical treatment in the HUS region is centralized at our clinic. In addition, we are responsible for patients requiring neurosurgical treatment in the Kymenlaakso, South Karelia and Päijät-Häme wellbeing services counties. You need a physician’s referral for examination and treatment at our clinic.

A referral is made by a physician at their own discretion, for example, at a health center, occupational health care service provider, or a private medical clinic. Services are available by appointment only.

### I received a referral to your unit. Where can I see if my referral has arrived and when an appointment will be made for me to see a physician?

---

By signing in to the Maisa Portal, you can view the status of your referral on the Referrals tab. The referral response will also be sent to you by letter or to Maisa.

We aim to arrange a treatment needs assessment within the statutory care guarantee period, which is three months of receiving the referral.

You will be notified of the first visit via text message and an appointment letter. Please note that receiving an appointment is affected by: the urgency determined by the neurosurgeon who evaluated the referral and the current waiting times**.**

### An initial appointment has been booked for me at your unit, but now my symptoms have become worse and I want to bring forward the appointment date. What should I do?

---

You should contact your referring physician, who may, at their discretion, make an urgent referral to our unit or provide you with other further treatment instructions if necessary.

### Where can I view my open X-ray and laboratory referrals?

---

You can view the examinations ordered for you by logging in to the Maisa Portal. Through the “Upcoming Tests and Procedures” link on the menu, you can access the page containing your upcoming examinations and procedures.

## Appointments and cancellations

### I have lost my appointment letter. Where can I find my appointment information?

---

All letters sent to you from HUS along with their attachments can be found in the Maisa Portal. If you are unable to log in to Maisa, you can also be informed of the appointments booked for you by calling our neurosurgery contact center at 09 471 87550 Mon–Fri from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

### How can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

---

If you wish to cancel your appointment, you can submit a cancellation request via the Maisa Portal. At the same time, be sure to notify if you need a new appointment.

You can also call the neurosurgery contact center to cancel or reschedule your appointment, 09 471 87550 Mon–Fri from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

Please note that you cannot come to the clinic if you are ill.

### I would like an earlier appointment, so how can I sign up for the waiting list for cancellation appointments?

---

You can sign up for the waiting list for cancellation appointments by sending us a message in Maisa or by calling the contact center for Neurosurgery, tel. 09 471 87550, open Mon–Fri 7:30–11:00 a.m.

### Where can I book an appointment for laboratory testing or medical imaging?

---

For laboratory tests, please book appointments at [www.huslab.fi/booking](https://secure.vihta.com/public-ng/hus/#/home). Some of the laboratories also serve with a take-a-number queue system.

For imaging examinations (magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography), an appointment will be made for you. You will receive the information via the Maisa Portal or by letter to your home address.

## Questions about the appointment or phone calls

### I have not yet received an appointment for a planned follow-up, why is that?

---

Unfortunately, our unit is currently backlogged, and appointments may be delayed. We schedule appointments in queue order. We will notify you as soon as the appointment has been booked.

Please note that a doctor first reviews any imaging results, at which time the doctor also records any further actions. The doctor’s review of the results is free of charge for you. If your matter requires a more detailed conversation with the doctor, we will book you a phone appointment or in-person appointment upon the doctor’s request.

### I have a scheduled remote appointment with a neurosurgeon, what does it mean?

---

Our remote appointments are always phone calls. Your doctor will call you on the day indicated in the letter. The call may show as coming from an unknown number. If you cannot answer the phone at a certain time, please inform us well in advance. A fee will be charged for the doctor's phone appointment.

### Should I fill out any health history forms before the appointment?

---

You can prepare for your outpatient appointment in Maisa. From the Maisa front page, you can access the Prepare for an appointment feature, which will guide you to review your contact information, current medication, and more. If you have been sent questionnaires or patient history forms to complete in connection with your appointment, the feature will guide you through with filling out the required forms.

### How much time do I need to schedule for an appointment?

---

It is advisable to arrive at the hospital well in advance of the start of the appointment so that you can register for the appointment. Please note, however, that appointment times may be delayed, and we recommend that you allow enough time for your visit.

### Can I bring someone to escort me?

---

You can take a person with you to accompany you to hospital.

### Where can I park in the hospital area?

---

A fee is charged for parking in the Meilahti hospital area. Information about parking and escort traffic areas can be found on the [Arrival to Meilahti Bridge Hospital web page.](https://www.hus.fi/potilaalle/sairaalat-ja-toimipisteet/meilahden-siltasairaala/saapuminen-meilahden-siltasairaalaan)

### Will the physician write out a medical certificate for sick leave after the appointment?

---

Sick leave is granted on medical grounds, which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you wish, you can get an appointment certificate for your visit which you can present to your employer if necessary.

## After the appointment and contacts

### My sick leave is ending and I need an extension. What should I do?

---

Sick leave can be extended at the discretion of the neurosurgeon during a follow-up appointment. If your need for sick leave continues, your situation should be assessed by primary health care, occupational health care, or the original referring unit. We do not schedule appointments solely for the purpose of issuing sick leave.

### What number do I call when I want to contact the unit that treated me?

---

You can reach your treatment unit by calling the neurosurgery contact center at 09 471 87550, Mon–Fri from 7:30 to 11 a.m. You can also contact us via Maisa.

### How can I provide feedback on my treatment?

---

You can give feedback on your treatment by completing an online customer-satisfaction survey on our [Give feedback web page.](https://www.hus.fi/potilaalle/opas-potilaalle/oikeutesi-potilaana/anna-palautetta)

### I have some questions about my invoice, where can I find out more information?

---

## Concerns related to upcoming surgery

### I was placed directly on a surgery waiting list based on a referral, what happens next?

---

We will notify you of your surgery date by text message, when it is scheduled. The waiting times for surgery vary based on urgency classification.

During the waiting period, we recommend that you contact your local health center to ensure that any underlying health conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac insufficiency) are well managed before the surgery. Please also visit a dentist for a check-up. Your scheduled surgery date may need to be postponed due to untreated underlying conditions or dental issues.

### I am on the waiting list for surgery. Where can I inquire when my surgery date will be?

---

The waiting times for surgery vary by the determined urgency. The appointment for the procedure will be communicated to you as early as possible via text message. You can inquire about the surgery appointment via Maisa or by calling the neurosurgery contact center at 09 471 87550 Mon–Fri from 7:30 to 11 a.m., line 3.

### I have been suddenly taken ill and have an appointment for surgery in the next few days; what should I do?

---

Please contact the surgery scheduler as soon as possible by calling the neurosurgery contact center at 09 471 87550 Mon–Fri from 7:30 to 11 a.m., line 3.

### Can I transfer my surgery?

---

If there is no justified reason for the cancellation (sudden illness), the waiting in queue is then considered to be the patient’s own decision and, therefore, the treatment time guarantee is no longer valid. If you cancel the proposed procedure date without a justified reason twice, you will be removed from the waiting list.

### My complaint is urgent and my condition has worsened, where do I call?

---

Please contact the Medical Helpline at 116 117.

## Certificates and patient instructions

### Where can I get a certificate for a Kela taxi?

---

Kela will reimburse trips made to healthcare if the journey was made due to illness, pregnancy, or childbirth. You may be reimbursed for taxi fare if, due to your medical condition, using public transport is not an option or if public transport is not available. You can request a Kela certificate for travel allowance from the professional treating you to apply for reimbursement of travel costs.

Read more at: [https://www.kela.fi/transport-by-taxi.](http://www.kela.fi/taksimatkat)

### The sick leave granted by your unit has expired, but I am not capable of returning to work yet. Where can I request an extension for my sick leave period?

---

We are not in a position to arrange work capacity assessments in specialized healthcare. If you are incapable to work at the end of your sick leave period, you should contact your occupational healthcare service provider or your local health center**.**

### I lost the home care instructions I received during my appointment, where can I get new ones?

---

Please call the neurosurgery contact center to contact the unit that treated you 09 471 87550, Mon–Fri 7:30 to 11 a.m. You can also contact us via Maisa.
