You will arrive for treatment in our outpatient clinic on the basis of a referral from a physician in a health center or occupational health care, a private physician or from another specialty in the hospital. In many cases, the referring unit has already conducted studies using blood tests, imaging and possible treatment trials. Common causes of referral include abdominal wall hernias, gallstones, various anal problems, constipation and fecal soiling, gastrointestinal tract tumors and suspected cancer, reflux disease, and goiter. Investigations to diagnose the cause of unexplained abdominal pain are also common. The need for further studies will be assessed on the basis of the symptoms and findings. Our outpatient clinics arrange, for example, ultrasound examinations, computed tomography and MRI scans, and esophageal acid and pressure measurements. During your appointment, we will also assess the need for endoscopic examinations. The surgeries will be carried out in our hospital's new surgery unit using modern methods and equipment. We use both open and endoscopic surgical techniques. Depending on the procedure, you can be discharged either on the day of the surgery or after a recovery period on an inpatient ward.
