Using surgical face masks in maternity hospitals
We provide surgical face masks for all expectant mothers coming in to give birth, and their support persons and doulas. Using protective equipment, observing good hand hygiene, keeping safe distances, and limiting movement are measures we use to prevent the spread of coronavirus in hospitals.
As a rule, we recommend that women giving birth and their support persons remain in their own room during and after labor. Furthermore, we ask that you avoid leaving the hospital during your stay.
Wearing a mask during labor and delivery is not mandatory. However, we recommend wearing a surgical face mask in the following phases, if your condition allows it:
- During labor induction before contractions start
- At the maternity ward after delivery.
You do not need to wear a mask during active labor. There is no need to wear a mask while sleeping either.
If you are coming in to give birth, or have given birth, and have COVID-19 symptoms, we will always place you in a single patient room.
Support persons for women giving birth must wear a surgical face mask throughout their stay in the hospital. If a support person is unable to wear a regular surgical face mask due to an allergy or asthma, we aim resolve the situation individually. We can offer, for example, visors or surgical masks suitable for people with allergies.
A doula present in the delivery room must wear a surgical face mask throughout their stay in the hospital.
