Stem cell-based tissue transplants

HUH Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases is world-famous for its pioneering work in taking advantage of stem cell technology in reconstructive surgery for bone tissue defects. In 2008, the department carried out the first known procedure in which a bone transplant that had been grown from stem cells extracted from the patient's own fatty tissue was used to replace a left upper jaw that had been removed due to a widespread tumour.
