3D modelling in corrective surgery for tissue defect

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases is a pioneer in 3D modelling and using medical rapid manufacturing technology. 3D modelling is utilised in planning and performing extensive surgery to treat cancer and in reconstructive surgery related to accidents.
 
The required implants are shaped and manufactured virtually, and then manufactured using rapid manufacturing technology. Rapid manufacturing is a computer-controlled process in which a solid object is manufactured on the basis of a virtual model. These may be implants that are placed in patients, such as a plate to fix a fracture. 
 
The required implants can be obtained in a few days. Individually shaped implants increase the accuracy of the surgery, shorten the time required for surgery and improve the outcome.
