Dental and oral diseases

The dental and oral diseases treated in specialised medical care at HUS are mainly related to difficult systemic diseases, the appropriate treatment of which requires a hospital environment.

When the patient is scheduled to have extensive surgery (e.g. organ transplant or heart surgery), or various cancer treatments have been scheduled for the patient, the dentition must be examined and the possible infections treated. If necessary, the elimination of infectious foci is carried out: defective, infected teeth are treated or removed. Additionally, an attempt is made to treat or eliminate all infection sites, such as gingivitis.

HUH Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases also treats the dentition of patients with developmental disabilities and certain systemic diseases under general anesthesia.

As a rule, routine dental care is later continued in primary health care.
