Treatment of gestation diabetes

The outpatient clinic provides information on the effects of gestation diabetes on the baby to be born and the mother's long-term risks. At the clinic, the mother learns to monitor her blood glucose level and treat her gestation diabetes with dietary measures and insulin therapy. The treatment team consists of a midwife and a doctor.

Goals of the treatment and monitoring:

  • normalisation of blood glucose level during pregnancy
  • self-monitoring of blood glucose levels and successful insulin treatment
  • adoption of healthy eating habits and increased physical exercise
  • prevention of additional complications caused by gestation diabetes
  • reduction of risk to develop type 2 diabetes
