Duration of stay and hospital fees

Duration of hospital stay

The mother and baby are discharged when their condition allows.

  • first-time mothers: 2 or 3 days after delivery on average
  • mothers who have given birth before: 1 or 2 days after delivery
  • mothers who have had a Cesarean section: 3 or 4 days after delivery

Furthermore, the HUS maternity units offer the opportunity for short stay delivery for mothers who have given birth before. The mother may be discharged 6 to 24 hours after delivery if the mother and baby are in good health. They come to the hospital outpatient clinic for a follow-up visit 3 to 5 days after the delivery.

Patient fees

In Finland, the costs of health care are mainly paid by the patient’s municipality of residence. The fees charged to the patients by maternity units are based on the Act and Decree on Client Fees in Social Welfare and Health Care.

  • Visits to the maternity outpatient clinic are subject to outpatient fee.
  • Ultrasound screenings are free of charge.
  • Daily hospital fee is charged for all hospital days including the arrival and discharge days.
  • A double fee is charged for the use of a family room.
  • Any treatment of the baby in the pediatric ward is also subject to daily hospital fee. (For under 18-year-olds, daily hospital fees are charged for a maximum of seven days during a calendar year.)
  • A missed / uncancelled appointment is subject to a no-show fee (33,90 €) if the patient is 15 years or older. No fee is charged if there is an acceptable reason for not cancelling the appointment (such as sudden illness).
