Adult patients in the HUH area with internal medicine emergencies in need of examinations and treatment are treated in the HUH Meilahti, Jorvi, and Peijas hospitals, and in Haartman and Malmi hospitals which are managed by the city of Helsinki. Elsewhere in the HUS region, patients with internal medicine emergencies are treated in Hyvinkää, Lohja, Raasepori, and Porvoo hospitals.
Patients are accepted to the Internal Medicine Emergency Unit at Meilahti only with a referral from a doctor, or if transported there by paramedics. In the other hospitals, primary health care and specialised health care have joint emergency units, and a separate referral is not needed.
The most common symptoms examined and treated at an internal medicine emergency unit include chest pain, shortness of breath, arrhythmia, and fever and other infection related symptoms.

- Joint emergency services that provide 24 h health centre emergency services for the City of Hyvinkää, and evening and night-time emergency services for other municipalities in the area (Järvenpää, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Tuusula).

- 24 h specialised health care emergency services (surgery, paediatrics, and internal medicine)
- Health centre emergency services at Jorvi Hospital are available outside office hours on weekdays and 24 h during the weekends. Patients from Espoo and Kauniainen must go to their local health centre during 8:00–16:00. Patients from Kirkkonummi must go to their local health centre during 8:00–20:00.

- Joint emergency services that provide health centre emergency services outside office hours on weekdays and 24 h during the weekends and holidays (Karkkila, Lohja, Siuntio, and Vihti).
