The Department of Pulmonary Medicine is part of the Helsinki University Hospital’s
Heart and Lung Center. The Department operates throughout the HUS catchment area, which includes the Meilahti, Jorvi and Peijas hospitals, the Sleep Unit at the Skin and Allergy Hospital, and the Rekola Group Home, which treats patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency and coordinates treatment of patients on home mechanical ventilation. The Department also provides outpatient treatment services. Patients need a referral to be admitted to the Department for examinations and treatment.
The primary task of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine is to provide specialised treatment for adult patients with respiratory diseases in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava and Kirkkonummi. Other specialised pulmonary units in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa are based in the Hyvinkää, Lohja, Porvoo and Western Uusimaa (Tammisaari) hospitals.
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Meilahti Hospital provides tertiary-level specialised care for pulmonary diseases within the HUS special responsibility area and is the treatment centre for lung transplant and pulmonary arterial hypertension patients for the whole country. The Sleep Unit is in charge of specialist-level sleep research.
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine employs a total of 24 specialists, 9 specialists-in-training and a full team of nursing staff. Being part of a University Hospital, the Department contributes to the training of future generalists and specialists and actively pursues a programme of scientific research.
