Diseases in Thoracic Cavities

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Meilahti Hospital provides tertiary-level specialised care for pulmonary diseases within the HUS special responsibility area and is the treatment centre for lung transplant and pulmonary arterial hypertension patients for the whole country. The Sleep Unit is in charge of specialist-level sleep research.

Thoracic surgery is a specialty field in surgery involved in the surgical treatment of lung diseases. In HUS, thoracic diagnostic testing and operations on adult patients are conducted in the Heart and Lung Center of Helsinki University Central Hospital at Meilahti Tower Hospital. ​
Thoracic surgery refers to operations of the chest wall, lungs, pleura, diaphragm, bronchial tubes, and the mediastinum, as well as surgical procedures of the esophagus and trachea. Approximately 1,000 thoracic procedures are performed in HUS every year.

Emergency care

The most common conditions requiring emergency cardiac surgery are
  • acute coronary heart disease and the risk of myocardial infarction
  • rupture of the aorta
  • endocarditis
  • organ transplant operations, and
  • cardiac trauma.
