Appointment with a physician

Patients being treated by a urologist visit their physician at the Peijas or Meilahti Hospital Urology Outpatient Clinics. The uro-oncological appointments at the Oncology Outpatient Clinic are on the 1st floor of the HUCH Department of Oncology.

The patient will meet a specialist in the field or specialists-in-training already familiar with the field. At the appointment, the current status of the disease and the patient’s symptoms, general condition, and any illnesses potentially affecting the treatment, as well as the patient’s wishes, will be charted. Treatment decisions are made jointly with treating physician and the patient. The patient is welcome to bring one or more close relatives or friends to the appointment.

After the physician’s appointment and during the same visit, the patient often also meets with the clinic’s nurse: a prostate cancer nurse at the Urology Outpatient Clinic or a uro-oncological nurse at the Oncology Outpatient Clinic. In connection with these meetings, hormone therapy (such as LHRH analog injections) that slow down cancer, or medication to strengthen the bones may be administered. The clinic’s nurse is also the contact person for issues arising between appointments.
