Psychosocial Support Unit

The psychosocial support unit, led by a psychiatrist, has been operating at the Cancer Center since 1997 and is unique in Finland. The unit’s task is to help patients in need of special support to cope with their new and difficult circumstances arising from cancer through discussion. The unit employs psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Some 400 patients visit the psychosocial support unit each year for an average of 4 to 5 appointments. No fewer than one in ten cancer patients requires special psychosocial support from experts. The treating physician can refer the patient to the psychosocial unit if needed.
