Nutrition during breast cancer treatments

Staying well-nourished helps a breast cancer patient feel healthier and cope better during treatments.

No special foods are required, just a “normal” and well-balanced diet. The patient should try to maintain normal weight and not lose weight during cancer treatments.

Attention should be given to getting enough protein. Protein preserves muscle mass and helps the body withstand treatments. White meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes are recommended. Unsaturated fats should also be included in the diet: canola oil, vegetable oil-based margarines, fish and nuts. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be eaten daily, while sugary beverages and alcohol should be avoided.

A physician can provide a referral for an appointment with a therapeutic dietitian as needed.
