Rehabilitation Unit, Unit Manager Jaana Saarinen, jaana.t.saarinen@hus.fi

The goal of physiotherapy is to support children and adolescents in upholding and developing their mobility and ability to function. Physiotherapy also aims to make it easy for skills trained in physiotherapy to be transferred into everyday life in the child’s or adolescent’s own environment. A physiotherapist can assess how children of different ages develop in their mobility, or how an injury or illness affects the child’s mobility and ability to function. Physiotherapists also participate in the rehabilitation of children who are in treatment in the hospital. Physiotherapists are available at the hospital’s outpatient clinics and wards.

A physiotherapist will perform an assessment, which is used as a base for planning individual physiotherapy goals together with the child or adolescent and their family. A rehabilitation plan is made and the necessary continued rehabilitation is organized. Children and adolescents will receive continued rehabilitation in their familiar environment or with their health center’s physiotherapist. Additionally, the physiotherapist will assess the patient’s need for mobility aids or assistive technology in sports, and helps the family in the procurement process.
