Patients need a referral from a physician in outpatient care, basic health care, or specialised medical care unit to be able to book an appointment at the Infectious Diseases Clinic. The clinic has no emergency department.

The Infectious Diseases Clinic examines, treats, and follows difficult, long-term, or chronic infectious diseases. In addition to HIV infections, these include infections requiring long-term antibiotic treatment such as infections in a surgical site. Examination and treatment of rare and tropical infectious diseases and congenital or acquired immunodeficiencies are also centralised in the clinic.

As well as several infectious diseases specialists, and physicians specialising in infectious diseases, a number of nurses who are familiar with HIV infections and epidemiology and instructing the implementation of immunoglobulin replacement therapies work at the Infectious Diseases Clinic. In addition, a psychiatric nurse, hospital social worker, and ward secretaries work at the outpatient clinic. External interpretation services are used according to need.
