Patients with benign or malignant diseases of the lungs, esophagus, trachea, mediastinum or chest wall are treated at the Pulmonary and Esophagus Surgery Ward. The Department of General Thoracic and Esophagal Unit in the Heart and Lung Center is a leading developer in its field in Finland.

Some patients are admitted for a planned procedure or surgery, others are admitted via the Emergency Department. The age of the patients varies from young adults to elderly people. The treatment periods can last from few days to weeks. There are 24 beds on the ward.

The thorax surgery patients' contact nurse handles patient referrals together with the thorax surgeon, who assesses the urgency of the referral and gives procedural instructions. Certain patients will only need outpatient care, an appointment with a physician, a small procedure or a paper consultation, while some patients will require surgery or a procedure, which requires them to stay at the ward.

Patients coming for surgery are often given an outpatient appointment where they meet a nurse, a physiotherapist, the operating physician and the anaesthesiologist, who will give guidance on how to prepare for the operation.
