The endoscopy unit performs various endoscopic examinations of the digestive tract and bronchial tubes, in order to identify diseases in these parts of the body. Examinations are performed with a flexible endoscope – a narrow tube with channels for various items of medical equipment and a digital camera at the end.

The most common examinations include gastroscopies, colonoscopies and bronchoscopies for the investigation of pulmonary diseases. Biopsies and various procedures such as removals of small tumours can be performed during endoscopies.

Endoscopes can be used for imaging bile ducts and procedures which include the removal of calculi from bile and pancreatic ducts, without surgery. Ultrasound endoscopy can reveal changes that are difficult to detect using other scanning techniques. The procedure also enables biopsies to be taken through the gastrointestinal tract or bronchial tubes, in areas where biopsies are not otherwise possible.

The gastroenterology outpatient clinic treats hepatic and gastrointestinal diseases. The most important patient groups include patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune diseases of the liver (PBC, PSC and autoimmune hepatitis) or viral hepatitis.
