Sleep related breathing disorders are investigated and treated at the Pulmonary Diseases Outpatient Clinic. Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common disorder. You can get in examinations and treatment for sleep related breathing disorders with a referral from a doctor. The referral should include basic test results as well as results from a nocturnal polysomnography.

If needed, the continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP treatment will begin at the Pulmonary Diseases Outpatient Clinic. A specialised doctor at the clinic will evaluate the need for treatment and nurses specialised in sleep and the CPAP device are responsible for the implementation of the treatment. Patients get the devices and equipment needed from the clinic free of charge. Regular clinic fees apply for the doctor's and nurse’s appointments.

Sleep apnoea patient's follow-up at the clinic

Long term follow-up for CPAP treatment takes place at the Sleep Apnoea Clinic at the Pulmonary Diseases Outpatient Clinic. If no problems occur and the treatment takes place regularly, all CPAP patients will move to the Sleep Apnoea Clinic after the one year check-up.
People working in certain occupations (e.g. professional drivers, pilots, engine drivers) have annual routine check-ups at the doctor's or nurse's appointment. If you work in a field where sleep apnoea could cause a risk, or you transfer to such duties, please inform us so we can schedule the annual check-ups. Well treated sleep apnoea does not stop you from working in these occupations. Valid professional driver's licence requires follow-up even if you are not directly in a profession that could cause risks. ABC-license alone does not require follow-up, but the medical reports needed to renewal driver's licence after certain age will require a certificate about sleep apnoea treatment. You can get the certificate for this purpose from the Sleep Apnoea Clinic.
The Sleep Apnoea Clinic concentrates only on the matters related to CPAP treatment’s follow-up. This makes quick and fluent treatment in problems related to the CPAP treatment possible. Other pulmonary diseases are treated at regular health care services, either at your health centre or in occupational health care.

Equipment distribution

You will get the equipment for your treatment at the appointment.  The devices need no maintenance besides changing filters. You get one mask and one hose for free per year from the hospital. You get the new equipment by contacting the nurse at the Sleep Apnoea Clinic, primarily by e-mail, or call during the telephone duty. The equipment will wait for you at the information desk at Jorvi Hospital and you can pick them up from there as agreed, preferably during 7:30–19.30.
If you need more than one mask a year, you will need to pay for it yourself. See instructions.
