Once the referral has arrived at the speciality outpatient clinic, the chief physician or physician in charge assesses the urgency of treatment need, defines the receiving unit and, if necessary, prescribes examinations that will be performed prior to the outpatient clinic visit. Based on the examinations and an appointment with a specialist, a decision regarding surgery is made together with the patient. The surgery decision includes an estimate regarding the need and urgency for surgical treatment, the patient’s eligibility for surgery, and a surgery and discharge plan.
The surgical waiting list is attended to by five staff members who book operations according to their specialities.
According to the care guarantee, patients are called in for surgery according to their place on the waiting list, unless their urgency classification defines otherwise.
