Patients are admitted to the Neurology Outpatient Clinic based on a referral when they are suffering from neurological symptoms. The speciality of neurology includes the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system or the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and muscles. Either the health centre, a private medical centre, a physician in another hospital or institution provides the patient with a referral. Based on the referral, the neurology chief physician assesses the urgency of the need for a neurology consultation. In accordance with the patient’s symptoms and the outpatient clinic’s waiting list situation, the waiting time for the first neurologist appointment can vary from weeks to months.

Based on the neurologist’s examination and interview, the patient is prescribed further examinations, if necessary. If the patient is diagnosed with a neurological disease after the examinations, he or she will be regularly monitored by the outpatient clinic.

In many cases, neurological diseases are chronic diseases whose actual, underlying cause is unknown. Thus, there is no curative treatment available and drawing up a prognosis of the disease course is extremely difficult. A long-term illness not only changes the patient’s own life but also the lives of his or her family members in a significant way. Care at the Neurology Outpatient Clinic aims to provide the patients with information and support in learning to live with their disease and coping with the new situation caused by the neurological disease.
