Vitreoretinal Surgery Unit S7 holds 10 hospital beds, and we are the only other ward unit, in addition to the emergency outpatient clinic, that is continuously open. Outpatient clinic appointments in our area of expertise are also held in connection with the unit.
Our special expertise includes primarily vitreoretinal surgery which is to say our operations are focused on surgery in the back of the eye. Furthermore, we treat all eye cancer patients requiring eye preserving radiation therapy nation-wide. We are also the only unit in Finland providing centralized surgical attachment surgery for emergency retinal detachment patients during weekends.
During the weekends, the ward also treats patients transferring from the day and week wards and emergency patients requiring treatment at a ward. In addition, we treat pediatric ophthalmology patients at night and during the weekends when the pediatric and strabismus units are closed.
Surgery concerning the back of the eye is usually lengthy microsurgery, lasting on average 1.5–2.5 hours, which requires special precision. Our surgery model with short-term after-care is increasingly moving towards the ambulatory surgery model. The average time spent in our care is 1.4 days.
